I'm Victoria. I'm 12 years old and I have Down syndrome

Victoria is 12 years old. Her passions are drawing, swimming and dancing, along with singing her favourite songs at the top of her lungs. With her big smile and bigger heart, Victoria brings the light with her when she enters a room. Her presence is gentle, affectionate, filled with genuine enthusiasm for life and the people around her.

Victoria was born with Down syndrome, which means she has had to work harder to learn all of life’s everyday tasks and actions: speaking to make herself understood, reading, counting, all were trials that demanded the perseverance of an athlete. For her, school is a daily challenge, but she is managing it well, surrounded by students who also progress at their own pace in a special class. Phys Ed is her favourite subject; she says that’s what makes her “powerful.”

Physically, Victoria is perfectly healthy, but she needs more extra-curricular activities to stimulate her cognitive development. Special resources for cases like hers are not always easily accessible, however. Her family, of Belarusian origin, has been settled in Quebec for years, and they have worked hard since her birth to guide and support her through all aspects of her development. Loving and ever-present, the family members are a vital force in Victoria’s journey, just as the professionals committed to her success have played an essential role.

She enjoys playing with her friends, engaging in quiet artistic activities, or camping by a lake. She yearns to travel and hopes some day to be a teacher, which would fulfill a desire to help others.

When asked to describe her defining characteristic, Victoria will reply that she loves life, and it’s certainly plain to see. Celebrating every moment, that’s where Victoria’s strength lies!
