At first glance, nobody would suspect that Loik fights a daily battle. At 14, he has energy to spare, loves driving an ATV, jumping on a trampoline, hanging with friends and putting on his cleats to play soccer. He’s always ready with a joke and plows headfirst through life with a drive that impresses everyone he meets.

Since 2021, however, Loik has been living with something his grin doesn’t show. This young teenager has two disorders – chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis and idiopathic juvenile arthritis, the first diagnosed in 2021 and the second in 2023.

He has now completed the IV treatment for his osteomyelitis, but he is still required to take daily medication and attend numerous follow-up appointments, physiotherapy sessions and massage therapy treatments. Sometimes, the pain makes walking a genuine challenge.

The hardest part is that his illness doesn’t show. Loik often prefers to keep his friends in the dark lest he be judged. It’s important to him that the illness is never allowed to take over his life.

Football has become his gateway to freedom. This is when he feels strongest. Though never imagining he might one day practice this sport, he can now run, play the game, and enjoy every minute on the pitch. Another victory he relishes: after years spent taking medication that slowed his physical development, he is now growing normally. This has given him fresh hope and echoes his outlook on life: “Nothing can stop me.”

Still, some days are harder than others. When those happen, Loik recovers his optimism by spending time with friends on his ATV or at the controls of his virtual reality flight simulator. In fact, his dream is to join the armed forces as a pilot.

With the support of Fondation Tremblant, Loik is able to attend the Articulaction camp with other young people who are also living with physical disorders. It’s a comforting reminder that he is never alone on his journey.

Loik himself is a reminder that the greatest strengths are the ones you don’t see.
