Hi, my name is Emanuel. I am 13 years old, and I am being treated for leukemia at CHEO Hospital.
At the age of 13, Emanuel is a teen brimming with energy, a big-hearted youngster with a clearly defined character. He loves hockey, basketball, Pokemon cards and is devoted to the Montreal Canadiens. He dreams of owning his own shop one day where the specialty will be hockey and Pokemon cards. People who know Emanuel describe him as smart, creative and caring.
In October 2024, his life took an unexpected turn when he was told he had leukemia. The months that followed were extraordinarily difficult, and Emanuel soon learned to deal with a radically different rhythm to his days. Between long periods in the hospital, complications, infections and intensive treatments, this young man faced immense challenges.
Among the toughest moments that stick with him in memory is the frequent changing of the nasogastric tube he wore to nourish himself – a highly unpleasant period of time.
In spite of all he’s been through, Emanuel has also scored some beautiful victories. Being able to resume playing hockey was one of those important moments that testify to his strength of will. His favourite quote – “Never back down, never give up” – suits him perfectly. It’s a motto that encapsulates his courage, resolve, and determination to keep going, no matter what.
Today, Emanuel is gradually picking up the pieces of his former life. He is able to put on his skates, practice the sports he loves, and experience the little teenage joys he’d missed.
Nothing is more important to Emanuel than time spent with family. With his younger brother Zachary, his parents Valérie and Eric, and his loyal canine Lucky, he cherishes every minute: being active indoors or out, watching a hockey game or just enjoying family time.
What is his fondest dream? To meet the Montreal Canadiens players and be able to skate with them. While waiting for that vision to come true, Emanuel remains an inspiration to everyone who crosses his path.
Thanks to the CHEO Foundation, we get to meet some incredible people!
